The Maintenance Repairman is responsible for performing a variety of maintenance and repair tasks on a college campus to ensure a safe, functional, and welcoming environment for students, faculty, and staff. This role requires expertise in multiple trades, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical work. The Maintenance Repairman will work collaboratively with a team and independently in the completion of tasks.
Examples of Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform carpentry tasks such as repairing doors, door frames, and furniture; fabricating and installing temporary partitions; and operating power and hand tools to execute projects.
Paint and decorate building interiors, ensuring aesthetic and functional standards are met.
Execute masonry work related to buildings, foundations, sidewalks, and walls.
Install and maintain plumbing fixtures, including steam lines and heating equipment.
Install electrical circuits, wall plugs, and lighting fixtures; repair and maintain fans.
Repair locks and locksets to enhance building security.
Conduct roof repairs, including the installation of flashing and spouts.
Operate snow removal equipment and remove snow from sidewalks and parking lots, especially during inclement weather.
Respond to emergency maintenance requests as needed and perform related duties as assigned.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist in the development of maintenance schedules and priorities.
Participate in safety training and adhere to safety protocols and procedures.
Maintain accurate records of work performed and materials used.
Collaborate with other departments for special projects or events as needed.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
May oversee and guide the work of semi-skilled maintenance student workers and helpers during projects, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and safely.
Typical Qualifications
Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities:
Proficient knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and practices used in at least two of the building, electrical, or mechanical trades.
Familiarity with occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with maintenance work.
Ability to effectively use and maintain tools and equipment in various trades.
Skilled in diagnosing defects in equipment and performing necessary repairs or adjustments.
Ability to interpret and work from sketches and diagrams, and to follow oral and written instructions.
Capable of operating snow removal equipment and performing related tasks under adverse weather conditions.
Strong teamwork abilities and interpersonal skills.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standards accepted practices.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
Minimum of four years of experience in building and plant maintenance work, with hands-on involvement in at least two of the following trades: building, electrical, or mechanical.
High school diploma or equivalent preferred; relevant technical training or certification is a plus.

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands:
Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards
Conditions may require walking, stooping, climbing, pushing, pulling, heavy lifting (less than or equal to 50 pounds), high climbing, bending, working in awkward positions handling equipment and materials.
Requires the ability to lift and move heavy objects (at least 50 pounds) and to perform tasks requiring physical stamina, such as climbing, bending, and standing for extended periods.
Work is performed in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings, including exposure to inclement weather conditions.

Completion of safety training and adherence to all safety regulations.
Must possess a valid driver’s license and be willing to operate college vehicles as needed.
This position may be designated as “Essential” and/or the employee may be required to provide a means to be contacted during non-duty hours for emergencies. In the event of a campus emergency, special event, closure to maintain campus safety or building operations, this position may be required to work outside of regularly scheduled hours.
