The Library Assistant works full-time as part of the Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology (TSCT) Library team. Primary duties involve staffing the front desk as assigned, supervising student workers, and carrying out purchasing/receiving functions. Secondary duties include reporting data as requested, making signage and displays, organizing special events, and working on archive projects as assigned. This position will work Monday through Thursday 10:30a-7:00p and Friday 8:30a-5:00p.
Examples of Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
FRONT DESK / CLOSING (20%)
Work at front desk as assigned by Library Director, doing other duties as much as possible, but with primary focus on providing timely, appropriate, and top-quality reference/circulation service to library patrons. Duties include directing walk-ins to service points on other floors.
SUPERVISE STUDENT WORKERS (30%)
• In conjunction w/Library Director, establish policies, procedures, and expectations for student employees.
• Make semester schedules and coordinate student hours.
• Communicate job expectations and feedback to student employees.
• Make semester schedules and coordinate student hours.
• Approve student employee timesheets and submit hiring/termination paperwork as required.
PURCHASING (10%)
• Create purchase orders and receiving reports as indicated by Library Director.
• Communicate with TSCT business office as necessary about purchasing procedures.
STACKS MANAGEMENT (10%)
• Monitor book drop and check in returned items.
• Reshelf returned books.
• Monitor shelves for books that need new labels or replacement.
OTHER (20%)
• Make signage as requested by Library Director.
• Organize and carry out special events as requested by Library Director.
• Monitor paper supply in printers/copier, and oversee computer lab (deal with problems, answer questions)
• Carry out archive-related projects as requested by Library Director (e.g., digitization, inventory)
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
• Demonstrate day-to-day commitment to the Stevens College core values of excellence, care, and community.
• Execute all tasks assigned by the Library Director diligently, on schedule, and to the highest standard.
• Work with other library team members to achieve daily, weekly, and monthly goals as established by Director.
• Participate in staff meetings by giving updates, answering questions, making suggestions, and voicing concerns.
• Answer queries appropriately from student, faculty, and staff members, and address their concerns.
• Communicate with other library staff members in an appropriate, cordial, professional, and timely fashion.
• Maintain a high level of professionalism while representing Stevens College in all forms of communication.
• Expand skills by attending workshops and training sessions, either remotely or in person, as requested by Director.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by Library Director.
• Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervise up to 5 PT student employees.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to communicate effectively.
Excellent computer proficiency (MS Office – Word, Excel, Outlook).
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.
Demonstrated commitment to a safe work environment.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in any field required.
Library experience strongly preferred.
Experience with archives and/or archival software a plus.

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands:
Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
Conditions may require walking, stooping, climbing, pushing, pulling, heavy lifting (less than or equal to 50 pounds), high climbing, bending, working in awkward positions handling equipment and materials.
Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on telephone.
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
