Job Title: Assistant Director, Residence Life

Job Description: The Assistant Director assists the director with the administrative direction for the residential experience of approximately 720 students including housing, residential living, conduct, and behavioral intervention. The AD is a 12-month, full-time, live-in professional who is responsible for the supervision and management of residence hall communities. AD’s respond to student health, safety, conduct concerns, and supervise Residence Hall Advisors in absence of director. Through a lens of student-centeredness, AD’s engage in inter-department partnerships and over the delivery of transformative social and educational programs that cultivate a sense of belonging.

*A temporary live-off option, with stipend, can be supported if the location is within 15-minutes of the college.

Examples of Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Manages the operations, programs, and services for the residence hall community.
Responds and communicates effectively and immediately to emergency and/or life-threatening situations.
Conduct several walk-through/rounds in area of supervision.
Maintain a high level of visibility and availability to students.
Completes administrative tasks and submits timely reports and forms.
Inspects hall and rooms regularly to ensure compliance with health and safety requirements.
Develops social and educational engagement/programming initiatives.
Interprets, supports, and enforces college and residence hall policies, procedures, and regulations.
Type incident reports on student violations and other situations.
Assists, advises, and counsels students and be able to connect students with the appropriate resources.
Performs administrative, clerical duties, and other related tasks as assigned.
Ensures the development of an environment that fosters student development and enhanced educational opportunities through the promotion of programs, active support of leadership opportunities, and support of student development opportunities
Ensures the enforcement of all residence hall policies and procedures, with a special emphasis on safety and security
Collaborate closely with the Maintenance, Custodial Services, Security, and other departments to ensure a well-maintained, safe, and comfortable residential community

Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Maintain updated inventories of all residence hall equipment, room, & lounge furniture.
Oversee projects as assigned.
Attend weekly departmental staff meetings.
Recruits and promotes student involvement for the Residence Hall Council and oversee meetings.
Oversee college resources provided for students with significant needs.
Coordinate intercultural events that support the student representation at the college
Meet and collaborate with club advisors to promote institutional events that support intercultural engagements
Act as a liaison between student organizations and clubs by attending Student Government Association meetings and coaching students on how to engage the campus.
Oversee residence hall community engagement plan.
Support and attend departmental events and programs.
Partake in departmental/college-wide training and development workshops.
Consult with the Vice President of Student Services and Director of Residence Life regarding referrals and other necessary conduct actions.
Serve as an integral part of the Campus-wide Retention Committee
Oversee and participate in departmental and college-wide meetings and committees, as necessary or assigned
Serve as a resource after-hours for student concerns, facilities concerns, and crisis management
Assists director to develop, coordinate, and implement processes for all phases of student housing selection and assignment, including roommate conflict resolution and mediation processes
Assists director to oversee internal and external communication related to the opening and closing of residence halls, housing selection, and housing assignment processes
Assists director to coordinate evaluation and assessment of department’s programs, services, policies, and procedures
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervise hall opening and closing procedures at the beginning and end of each semester and during extended holiday breaks.
Supervise student workers in area and provide necessary training and guidance to student workers.
Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains student workers.
Provides constructive and timely feedback to student workers.
Handles discipline and termination of student workers in accordance with college policy.
Assists director with recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and training of new staff.
Assists director with coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees.
Assists director with training of staff.
Implements and enforces systems, policies, and procedures.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
Associate’s degree (Master’s degree preferred in Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling, or related field) with previous residential life or related experience required.
Two to three years of job-related or residence life experience (preferred)
A minimum of one year of experience in residence life or other student affairs/development area required
Previous supervisory experience is preferred

Work Environment and/or Physical Demands:

Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards
Conditions may require walking, stooping, bending, reaching, climbing, pushing, pulling, lifting and carrying (less than or equal to 20 pounds)
Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on telephone
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
This position may be designated as “Essential” and/or the employee may be required to provide a means to be contacted during non-duty hours for emergencies. In the event of a campus emergency, special event, closure to maintain campus safety or building operations, this position may be required to work outside of regularly scheduled hours.
Dexterity to handwrite and manipulate computer keyboard and mouse
Ability to hear and speak clearly
Required Training and Other Conditions of Employment:
Must have appropriate clearances
CPR and AED certified
Must have valid driver’s license
